Curtain poles come in all different shapes, sizes and materials such as metal, wood or plastic and you can get a variety of curtains to personalise your home to your taste, which makes them the perfect feature for any room in your home. You can make your curtain fittings more of a decorative feature than just a standard curtain track.
When you are selecting your pole consider what type of pole you would like to buy. You can adjust the length of some curtain poles, while you can cut others to size using a hacksaw. It is also a good idea to consider what type of curtains you would like as this may change the type of pole you opt to buy. You can get curtains that hang from metal eyelets, rings or loops of fabric.
Top Tip - If you want to hang very heavy curtains or your wall isn’t completely sound, you might need to use longer masonry screws and wall plugs than the ones you get with the curtain pole.
To fit your curtain pole, you will need:
- A curtain pole
- Safety goggles
- A pipe and cable detector
- A Pencil
- A spirit level
- A drill and drill bits – remember to select the correct type of drill for the wall you are putting your shelf on.
- A screwdriver (check which type of screw head you have so you select the correct screwdriver!)
- Screws to go into the walls
- Wall plugs
- A second pair of hands!!
Step 1
The end brackets for your curtain pole should be at least 10cm from either end of the window recess and at least 10cm above the window recess. Mark the positions for the two end brackets using a pencil and then check they are level using a spirit level.
Step 2
Make sure there are no hidden pipes or cables behind the wall where you would like to drill, then drill at the marked positions with a masonry drill bit. Insert some wall plugs and screw the brackets into place.
Step 3
Prepare the curtain pole by cutting or adjusting it to size, then slide it through the brackets that you have just fixed to the wall. Add your chosen curtains to the pole and you are done!
Top Tip - Leave two curtain rings on the outside of each bracket, with the remaining rings between them. This will make your curtains look more aesthetically pleasing.
