The Best Places to Walk Your Dog in York

Looking for the perfect spots to take your dog for a walk in York? You're in for a treat! York is not just rich in history and charm, but it’s also a dog-walker’s paradise, with a variety of scenic routes and green spaces to explore. Whether your pup loves a riverside ramble, a run through expansive parks, or a leisurely stroll along cobbled streets, York has it all. In this blog, we’ll guide you through some of the best places to walk your dog in York, where both you and your furry friend can enjoy the beauty and excitement this city has to offer.

Here are some of the best walking locations for you to paw over:

1. To begin with the obvious, we have York Dog Park. Offering two one acre enclosed spaces, which you can have all to yourself! This is because they offer the option to book a one hour session for some true pet and owner one-on-ones, perfect for training. The York dog park is located in Knapton, and therefore is a wonderfully rural walking space. To find out more visit their website: https://www.yorkdogpark.co.uk/

2. Typically associated with odd hats, drinking, and potential gambling (caused by the drinking), York Racecourse offers a great route outside of its immediate associations. On days where the races are not on (you can typically guess this by how easy it is to drive around town), the race course offers a large and open space. Its tranquil setting enables your dog to roam free, and will hopefully tire them out enough to give you a break from playing tug-of-war in the evening.

3. The Solar Cycle path, aka Cycle Route 65, travels from the seaside town of Hornsea to Middlesborough. Route 65 also passes the North York Moors National Park, offering gorgeous views and many things for your dog to have a sniff of! The whole Route 65 is approx. 136 miles so you may want to just walk part of the route. The one thing to bear in mind is that although this route is brilliant for walking, it is intended for cyclists. Dogs should be kept on leads, and if yours is afraid of bikes/barks at them it is best to avoid!

4. Hob Moor - This large, open space is located in the Acomb area of York and is a popular spot for dog walkers. During the summer it is usually home to a herd of cows and so dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. A circular walk around the moor would take approximately an hour.

5. River Walks - The river is a great option for a scenic walk with your dog. You are lucky to have two rivers in York to choose from! Our favourite is to walk along the River Ouse from the Millenium Bridge you have the option of walking towards the city centre or into Bishopthorpe.
